The Storage Engineer is responsible for managing and supporting the zSeries storage environment. This role includes storage administration, capacity planning, troubleshooting, and ensuring system reliability for mainframe platforms.

Level 1 Responsibilities:

  • Provide day-to-day zSeries storage administration.
  • Support the storage environment for zSeries platforms.
  • Provide 24x7 rotating on-call support for storage environments.
  • Resolve production issues reported by users or monitoring systems.
  • Perform storage capacity planning and proactively prevent storage issues.
  • Collaborate with application teams and platform teams to troubleshoot complex issues.
  • Ensure data integrity and recoverability using backup and monitoring tools.
  • Plan and implement storage environment changes based on business requirements.
  • Coordinate with vendors for hardware and software support.
  • Use AI tools to analyze storage data and recommend improvements.
  • Use M365 Copilot for meeting summaries and documentation.

Level 2 Responsibilities (GDPS/MGM Environment):

  • Plan and implement storage changes for GDPS/MGM environments.
  • Work closely with zOS automation teams to support disaster recovery environments.
  • Configure zSeries storage arrays to maintain replication and capacity.

Level 1 Experience Requirements:

  • 6–10+ years working with IBM DASD and IBM VTS technologies.
  • 6–10+ years experience with IBM DFSMS, DFHSM, and DFDSS.
  • Experience managing and troubleshooting dataset types such as VSAM, sequential, and PDS.
  • Experience coding SMS ACS routines.
  • Experience with x37 abend recovery tools such as IBM Tivoli Advanced Allocation Manager.
  • Experience with IDCAMS and IBM utilities.
  • Strong knowledge of mainframe JCL.
  • Experience with REXX and/or SAS programming.
  • Experience with IBM RMM and CA1 tape management software.
  • Working knowledge of IBM storage solutions such as Transparent Cloud Tiering and Safeguarded Copy.
  • Experience with hardware encryption software.

Level 2 Additional Experience (GDPS/MGM):

  • 8+ years of hands-on experience working with IBM GDPS/MGM environments.
  • Experience with IBM Spectrum Control.
