The Mainframe MQ Engineer is responsible for supporting IBM MQ environments on z Systems and IBMi platforms. This role involves maintaining messaging infrastructure, troubleshooting MQ issues, supporting application integrations, and ensuring system availability and performance.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide support for IBM MQ environments on z/OS and IBMi platforms.
  • Create and maintain Queue Managers and MQ objects such as queues and channels.
  • Support application integrations using MQ APIs.
  • Troubleshoot production messaging issues and provide solutions.
  • Monitor MQ environments for performance, availability, and reliability.
  • Support MQ upgrades, patching, maintenance, and lifecycle management.
  • Maintain technical documentation and operational procedures.
  • Design and maintain messaging flows and architecture diagrams.
  • Participate in on-call rotations and support incident resolution.
  • Support disaster recovery exercises and ensure system readiness.

Technical Skills:

  • Hands-on experience with IBM MQ support.
  • Experience with MQ on z/OS including queue manager configuration.
  • Experience with MQ on IBMi environments (preferred).
  • Knowledge of MQIPT and distributed MQ environments.
  • Understanding of application integration using MQ APIs.
  • Experience with z/OS tools including ISPF, JCL, SDSF, JES, PDSE, and VSAM.
  • Experience with SMP/E, DB2, CICS, IMS, and TCP/IP networking concepts.
  • Experience with MQ monitoring and performance tools.
  • Experience with MQ dashboard tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk, or Ironstream.
  • Experience analyzing SMF data for system statistics.

Additional Skills:

  • Experience with MQ alerting, automation, and monitoring configurations.
  • Knowledge of MQ clustering and point-to-point messaging.
  • Experience with MQ triggering to CICS, IMS, or z/OS systems.
  • Experience with shared queue groups, coupling facilities, and SMDS.
  • Experience with MQ logging including active and archive logs.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to work with vendor support teams for troubleshooting.
  • Ability to use AI tools to analyze system data and recommend improvements.
  • Ability to use M365 Copilot for meeting summaries and communication.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with IBMi commands, menus, and automation tools.
  • Experience with IBMi Integrated File Systems, jobs, logs, and libraries.
  • Experience with IBMi high availability solutions such as Mimix replication.
  • Experience supporting secure government environments such as FISMA.
